Manchester City Explores James Trafford Acquisition Amid Goalkeeper Speculations

by July 21, 2025

Manchester City’s Goalkeeping Situation

Manchester City may pursue the services of James Trafford, currently with Burnley, should they choose to acquire a new goalkeeper this summer, according to sources cited by ESPN. This interest comes as rumors swirl around a potential bid from Galatasaray for City’s Brazilian goalkeeper, Éderson, who has just one year remaining on his contract. Despite the speculation, no official offers for Éderson have been registered, and he has publicly expressed his intention to remain with Manchester City during the current season, specifically during his appearances at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Trafford’s Buy-Back Provision

In a related move, City had previously included a buy-back provision in the deal that allowed Trafford to transfer to Burnley in 2023, making him an attractive option for the club as they contemplate their goalkeeping situation. Meanwhile, Newcastle has also shown interest in the 22-year-old goalkeeper.

Backup Goalkeeper Uncertainty

Éderson’s current backup, Stefan Ortega, has yet to clarify his future with the club, sparking further uncertainty. The German goalkeeper, who is also bound by a contract that ends next year, has been linked to a return to the Bundesliga. Additionally, City’s third goalkeeper, Marcus Bettinelli, was signed from Chelsea on a one-year deal just ahead of the Club World Cup, adding to the dynamic within the squad.

Right-Back Position Concerns

On another note, Pep Guardiola is looking to shore up the right-back position in light of Kyle Walker’s departure to Burnley. Although City had previously considered Tino Livramento of Newcastle, it appears that they are now exploring alternative candidates for this role. Currently, the squad lacks a recognized right-back, although players like Rico Lewis, Matheus Nunes, and Manuel Akanji are capable of stepping in if needed.

Transfer Market Activity

Earlier in the transfer window, City made significant moves by securing new talents such as Rayan Aït-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, and Bettinelli before heading into the Club World Cup. As the transfer market progresses, their focus has shifted to offloading players who are no longer in their plans, including notable names like Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips.
