Toronto Maple Leafs Organizational Changes
As the Toronto Maple Leafs consider the future amidst a challenging season, significant alterations within their organization might be on the horizon following the recent ousting of Brad Treliving. Reports from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman highlight that Keith Pelley, the president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), convened a Zoom call with the hockey operations team, indicating that the organization anticipates further upheaval.
“There seems to be an expectation of additional moves beyond Treliving’s dismissal,” Friedman observed, hinting at a broader reformation within the organization.
At this stage, the Maple Leafs have not initiated contact with other teams regarding potential candidates, a notable point especially in relation to Doug Armstrong, the current general manager of the St. Louis Blues, who may not be available at this juncture. Friedman remarked that the timing may not align well for a switch involving Armstrong at this present time.
New Leadership and Potential Candidates
In a recent press conference, Pelley emphasized the need for a new head of hockey operations who prioritizes data analytics in decision-making. One of the prominent figures speculated to be on the Maple Leafs’ shortlist is Sunny Mehta, who has been the assistant general manager of the Florida Panthers, where he has recently led their analytics department.
On another note, Darren Dreger from TSN indicated that the Leafs might opt to fill just the general manager position instead of multiple roles as they seek to revamp their leadership. Mehta, recognized for his diverse background—from professional poker player to director of hockey analytics—could serve as a fitting candidate in this redefined organizational structure. Other potential options include former NHL executive Mike Gillis and retired defenseman Chris Pronger, as mentioned by Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos.
Looking Ahead
As the Maple Leafs prepare for their final five games before the season concludes on April 15, Pelley expressed his aspiration to solidify new leadership by the time of the NHL Combine in late May or ahead of the NHL Draft in June.
