Macklin Celebrini Set to Shine at IIHF World Championship
Macklin Celebrini, just 19 years old, is set to represent Canada once again in the upcoming IIHF World Championship tournament scheduled from May 15 to 31 in Switzerland. This follows his impressive performance at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, where he topped the leaderboard with five goals, narrowly missing gold as Canada claimed silver after a loss to the United States. The young star made history by becoming the first teenager to join a Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team in the modern NHL era.
Canadian Lineup Features Elite Talent
The Canadian lineup boasts an impressive array of talent, featuring the likes of John Tavares, a veteran forward who clinched an Olympic gold medal in 2014, alongside other former NHL All-Stars—Mathew Barzal, Ryan O’Reilly, Mark Scheifele, and defensemen Evan Bouchard and Morgan Rielly, as well as goalie Cam Talbot.
Celebrini’s Journey and Achievements
Before this, Celebrini made his mark as the youngest player at the World Championships in 2025, where Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Due to the overlap of NHL playoffs and the World Championships, teams are comprised of players whose NHL franchises are not still competing. Celebrini, who was drafted first overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2024 NHL Draft, had a stellar season, finishing fourth in the NHL with 115 points, although his team sadly did not make it to the playoffs.
As Celebrini prepares to don the Canadian jersey again, the anticipation builds for his contributions at this prestigious international tournament.
U.S. Squad’s Ambitious Goals
Meanwhile, Matthew Tkachuk leads the U.S. squad, eyeing a unique opportunity to join the prestigious Triple Gold Club—a remarkable achievement that would make him the first American to reach this milestone.
