Luka Modric Joins AC Milan

Luka Modric, the 39-year-old Croatian football star and former Ballon d’Or recipient, has made headlines with his transfer to AC Milan, a club he idolized in his youth due to the legendary Zvonimir Boban. Boban was a key player for Milan during the 1990s, a period when the club was considered an elite force in European football.

Restoring Glory

After an illustrious 13 seasons with Real Madrid, Modric is eager to restore the glory days to the Rossoneri, especially after their disappointing finish in Serie A last season, which saw them occupy eighth place and miss out on European competition for this year.

“Milan cannot accept mediocrity,” Modric asserted in an interview with Milan TV. He underscored his ambition for the club, stating, “It needs to aim for the highest goals—winning titles and competing with the world’s best teams. That’s why I’ve joined.”

His passion for Milan dates back to his childhood: “I grew up watching a lot of the Italian league, and Milan was my favorite team. Back in Croatia, it was hugely popular, particularly because of Zvonimir Boban, who was my idol.”

Contract and Commitment

Modric has signed a one-year contract with an option for an additional season, indicating that he had numerous suitors around Europe. However, the moment AC Milan expressed interest, he felt a strong connection to the club’s ambitions, particularly after sporting director Igli Tare traveled to Croatia to discuss his potential role in future projects with the team.

Coaching Changes

The club has recently brought back Massimiliano Allegri as head coach, hoping to re-establish its former dominance in Italian football. Allegri, who first led Milan to a league title in 2011 and later achieved great success with Juventus, is seen as a key figure in Milan’s revival.

Modric’s Role and Support for Teammates

Modric’s commitment to his new role is evident:

“I aim to contribute to winning, support my teammates, and work hard to secure my position in the squad. Nothing in life comes easily. You have to put in the effort and fight for it.”

As he takes the pitch with Milan, Modric will don the No. 14 jersey, which he previously wore during his time with Croatia and at Tottenham Hotspur, since the No. 10 shirt is currently held by Rafael Leão, who was named Serie A’s MVP when Milan clinched the league title in 2022. However, Leão’s recent performance has been inconsistent, prompting Modric to voice support for the younger player, declaring that “Leão is the present and future of Milan.”
