MLS Suspends Luis Suárez
Major League Soccer (MLS) has announced a three-match suspension for Luis Suárez following an incident in which the Inter Miami striker spat at a Seattle Sounders staff member after the conclusion of the Leagues Cup final held on August 31. As a result of this disciplinary measure, Suárez will miss critical fixtures against Charlotte FC on September 13, Seattle Sounders on September 16, and D.C. United on September 20.
Background of the Incident
This additional suspension comes on the heels of a six-match ban issued by the Leagues Cup Disciplinary Committee, triggered by Suárez’s behavior during and after the match, which ended in a 3-0 defeat for Inter Miami against Seattle at Lumen Field. Following the final whistle, Suárez was involved in heated exchanges and ultimately spat, leading to severe repercussions from the league.
Suárez’s Response
“It was a moment of much tension and frustration, where just after the game ended things happened that shouldn’t have happened, but that doesn’t justify my reaction,”
he stated. He further emphasized his remorse, explaining that he does not wish to set a poor example for his family or the club.
Inter Miami’s Statement
Inter Miami also released a statement decrying the actions following the final whistle, underlining the need for better conduct on the field.
Consequences for Others Involved
In a related decision, the league has banned Steven Lenhart, a member of the Seattle Sounders staff, from credential privileges for the remainder of the 2025 regular season and postseason due to his involvement in the altercation that followed the match. As per MLS guidelines, Lenhart will only have access to general seating areas during home games and will not be permitted near the field or team facilities. His access will be reviewed before the start of the 2026 season.
Moreover, the Seattle Sounders organization has been subjected to a financial penalty, the specifics of which remain undisclosed, for “misappropriation of credentials.” Additionally, Inter Miami players Sergio Busquets and Tomás Avilés faced sanctions from the Leagues Cup, receiving two-game and three-game suspensions respectively, although they will be available for upcoming fixtures without further penalties from MLS.
