Luis Suárez Expresses Desire to Retire with Lionel Messi, Focuses on Current Season

Luis Suárez’s Aspirations

Luis Suárez, the forward for Inter Miami, expressed a desire to conclude his career alongside his close friend and fellow teammate, Lionel Messi. In a recent statement, Suárez emphasized that while he hopes for a joint retirement, the individual choices of both athletes will ultimately depend on personal circumstances.

“We’re both at a stage where we need to focus on our health and make decisions that are right for us individually,”

he noted during a press conference on Tuesday.

Contract and Future Plans

Suárez’s contract with Inter Miami, like Messi’s, is set to expire at the end of the Major League Soccer (MLS) season in 2025. Currently, negotiations for an extension with Messi are reportedly in progress, with both the player and the club keen on maintaining their association both on and off the pitch.

Despite the possibility of retirement together being on the horizon, Suárez stated that he is concentrating on the present and his role in aiding Inter Miami’s development.

“I feel great physically and am committed to contributing to the team’s success. If the club wishes, I’m more than happy to continue my journey here. We’re both aligned in hoping to build a tradition of bringing talented players to the league and contributing to its growth.”

Unpredictability of Football

When asked about his immediate future, Suárez remained non-committal, acknowledging the unpredictability of football decisions.

“Football is full of surprises; sometimes plans pan out, and sometimes they don’t. Right now, I’m focused on enjoying my time with Inter, and future decisions will come in due time.”

Upcoming Challenges

Looking ahead, Inter Miami is gearing up for a challenging match against Tigres UANL in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals this Wednesday at Chase Stadium. Coach Javier Mascherano has indicated that Messi’s participation remains uncertain. Though he trained separately from the rest of the squad due to fitness concerns, he made a notable comeback from a minor muscle injury last Saturday during a match against LA Galaxy. In that outing, Messi scored a goal and delivered an assist, although Mascherano acknowledged that the star player was not entirely at ease.

“Leo has not trained with the group for now. After his last game, we observed some discomfort in him. His participation in the upcoming match will greatly depend on how he feels leading up to it,”

Mascherano stated.

Inter Miami’s Recent Success

In 2023, Inter Miami claimed the inaugural Leagues Cup trophy in dramatic fashion, overcoming Nashville SC in a penalty shootout to secure their first major honor.
