Luis Rubiales confronted with egg-throwing protest at book launch

Luis Rubiales Faces Dramatic Incident at Book Launch

Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, encountered an unusual and dramatic incident during a promotional event for his new book on Thursday evening. The event took place in Madrid on Maria de Molina Street, where Rubiales was presenting his book, titled “Kill Rubiales,” which he claims reveals the truth about his controversial actions since Spain’s Women’s World Cup triumph.

Egg Attack During Book Presentation

Rubiales, who stepped down from his position in September 2023 amid widespread backlash due to his behavior following the victory—most notably an unsolicited kiss on player Jenni Hermoso—was addressing a gathering when an assailant hurled three eggs at him. Footage from the event captured the moment of the attack and Rubiales’ reaction as he tried to confront the egg-thrower, who was swiftly escorted out by security.

In a subsequent interview with Radio Marca, Rubiales expressed his surprise, admitting he initially thought the individual might have been armed, as he said, “I didn’t know what he had in his hands. I thought he might have a gun… I wasn’t thinking about myself.”

Ongoing Legal Challenges

The altercation occurred amidst ongoing legal challenges for Rubiales; he had previously been found guilty of sexual assault in connection to the incident with Hermoso, leading to a fine exceeding €10,000, although he was acquitted of coercion charges. His appeal against this conviction was rejected by Spain’s High Court in June, but representatives have stated they plan to seek further appeals to the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, a separate video emerged showing a man being detained by law enforcement outside the event, illustrating the heightened tensions surrounding Rubiales’ controversial public image.
