Leadership Change at IIHF
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is poised for a leadership change later this year as current president Luc Tardif has confirmed that he will not run for re-election. Tardif, who assumed the presidency in 2021 after the lengthy tenure of Rene Fasel, made this announcement on his 73rd birthday. His current term is set to conclude in October.
Transition to New Leadership
In his resignation letter, Tardif stated,
“With the IIHF in a strong and stable position, I feel it is the right time to pass the puck to a younger leader.”
He assured the hockey community of his commitment to facilitating a seamless transition to his successor for the benefit of ice hockey globally.
Achievements During Presidency
During his time in office, Tardif championed the return of NHL players to the Olympic Games by negotiating a complex agreement among the NHL, the players’ union, the IIHF itself, and the International Olympic Committee. He also hinted at potentially remaining involved in preparations for the upcoming 2030 Olympic Games, which will take place in the southern regions of France.
Reflections on His Tenure
Reflecting on his presidency, Tardif described the past five years as both challenging and rewarding, particularly mentioning the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed pride in his role as a steward of the sport and its values during times of uncertainty, stating,
“I am incredibly proud to have been a guardian of our sport, our events, our organization and our values.”
Looking Ahead
As the search begins for Tardif’s successor, the IIHF finds itself at a pivotal moment, poised for potential new directions in leadership.
