LSU Breaks Losing Streak with Victory Over Missouri
BATON ROUGE, La. — In a crucial Southeastern Conference matchup on Saturday, LSU managed to break a four-game losing streak by defeating Missouri with a score of 78-70. The victory marked LSU’s first conference win of the season, improving their record to 13-5 overall and 1-4 in the SEC. Marquel Sutton stood out with an impressive performance, scoring 26 points, while teammate Max Mackinnon contributed 20 points, pivotal in gaining momentum for the Tigers.
Game Highlights
As the game entered the latter stages, Missouri saw a significant turnaround led by Jayden Stone and Mark Mitchell; Stone racked up 16 of his total 20 points in the second half, and Mitchell scored 11 of his 13 during the same period. The Tigers had initially struggled, trailing by 14 points at one point. However, their efforts brought them within four points with just a minute remaining in the match.
“Once Missouri was down 55-52, LSU responded aggressively by sinking their next five attempts, which included major three-pointers from both Rashad King and Mackinnon, extending their lead to 10 points.”
Even with Mitchell spearheading a late-game push for Missouri, scoring nine of their last 13 points, they could not reclaim the lead as Pablo Tamba and Sutton secured the game with timely free throws and defensive plays.
First Half Performance
At halftime, LSU was ahead 37-27, riding the scoring prowess of Sutton and Mackinnon, both of whom contributed to a quick 10-point opener for the team. Furthermore, LSU’s advantage in offensive boards was evident, resulting in an impressive 21-13 lead in points scored in the paint. They also excelled from the perimeter, hitting 10 of 26 three-point attempts. This win came as a refreshing rebound following their narrow loss to Kentucky, where they faltered despite leading by 18 points in the second half.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, Missouri will host Georgia on Tuesday, while LSU is set to play against Florida on the same day.
