Los Angeles Rams Elevate Nate Scheelhaase
In a strategic move for their upcoming season, the Los Angeles Rams are elevating Nate Scheelhaase from his role as an assistant to offensive coordinator, according to an insider report to The Associated Press on Friday. The source, who requested anonymity due to the Rams not officially announcing the changes within coach Sean McVay‘s staff, indicated that this transition comes after Mike LaFleur stepped down to take the helm at the Arizona Cardinals earlier this month.
Scheelhaase’s Coaching Background
Scheelhaase, 35, has gained recognition in NFL coaching circles, having notably interviewed for at least five head coaching positions in recent months. Over the last two years, he served as a key offensive aide under both McVay and LaFleur, culminating in a pass game coordinator title during the Rams’ successful campaign that led them to a 14-6 record and the NFC Championship game last season.
Coaching Changes Under McVay
Despite McVay being primarily responsible for play-calling and offensive design, this appointment marks the fifth time a different offensive coordinator has been brought on during McVay’s tenure, which began a decade ago. Previous offensive coordinators from this era, including Matt LaFleur, Zac Taylor, Kevin O’Connell, and Mike LaFleur, have all ascended to head coaching roles, with Taylor also having honed his skills under McVay as a quarterbacks coach.
Impact of Scheelhaase’s Experience
Interestingly, Scheelhaase, who was previously a quarterback at the University of Illinois, spent the past five years on the Iowa State coaching staff, concluding his stint there as the offensive coordinator. His ability to develop offensive strategies caught the attention of McVay, especially given the marked improvement the Cyclones showed under his guidance.
Looking Ahead
As part of his duties over the last season in Los Angeles, Scheelhaase meticulously crafted the offensive play designs for game week preparations, a role traditionally linked to several Rams assistants who moved up the coaching ladder. This past year, the Rams boasted one of the NFL’s most formidable offenses, leading the league in both scoring and total yardage, under the leadership of quarterback Matthew Stafford, who confirmed his return for an 18th NFL season. Looking ahead, the Rams are poised as potential Super Bowl contenders, with hopes to host the championship game at their home stadium, SoFi Stadium, in February 2027.
