Lorenz Ferdinand, son of Rio, signs professional deal with Brighton

Milestone for Lorenz Ferdinand

In a significant milestone for rising athlete Lorenz Ferdinand, the 18-year-old goalkeeper has officially signed his first professional contract with Brighton & Hove Albion. The son of former England footballer Rio Ferdinand, well-known for his illustrious career with Manchester United—where he garnered six Premier League titles—Lorenz has made impressive strides since joining Brighton’s youth setup as an under-13 player.

Career Progression

In January, he debuted for Brighton’s under-21 team in the Premier League 2, marking a step forward in his early career. Furthermore, he made his senior appearance for Havant and Waterlooville, a club in the seventh-tier league, in April, a game attended by his father. During a brief loan spell with the Southern League team, he maintained a commendable record, achieving two clean sheets across six undefeated matches.

Brighton’s Commitment to Young Talent

Brighton & Hove Albion is noted for its commitment to nurturing young talent, particularly goalkeepers. Notably, James Beadle, who joined the club from Charlton in 2022, recently secured a loan move to Birmingham City for the current season after playing a vital role in helping England’s under-21 team win the European Championships held in Slovakia.

Another young keeper, Carl Rushworth, has been part of Brighton’s squad since 2019 after transferring from Halifax and has also featured for the England under-21 squad.

New Contracts for Young Players

Lorenz Ferdinand is among a cohort of 13 academy players who have been granted their first professional contracts by the club. In a related development,

recently reported on a three-year contract signed by Harry Howell, a versatile forward who made history as Brighton’s youngest Premier League player at just 17 years and 29 days when he came on as a substitute against Liverpool last May.

Additionally, Freddie Simmonds, a 17-year-old central defender who has captained England’s under-16 and under-17 teams, has also received a professional contract and was included in the matchday squad for a Premier League draw with Leicester last April. Howell and Simmonds are part of a group of five talented young players who have risen through Brighton’s Lancing-based academy, showcasing the club’s strength in player development, with England under-21 international Jack Hinshelwood leading the way as a significant first-team contributor.
