Impressive Performance at Hahnenkamm Weekend
In Kitzbühel, Austria, world slalom champion Loic Meillard showcased an impressive performance during the initial run of the final event of the prestigious Hahnenkamm weekend. Meillard clocked in the fastest time, defeating Finland’s Eduard Hallberg by a margin of 0.35 seconds. Completing the top three was Henrik Kristoffersen, who finished with a time just shy of Meillard’s, trailing by 0.47 to 0.52 seconds along with several other competitors.
Meillard’s Journey and Confidence
Meillard, who clinched the world title in a previous event held in Austria last year, aimed for his first slalom victory of the current season after securing two podium finishes in December. His victory in a giant slalom in France last month has added to his confidence as he competes.
Atle Lie McGrath’s Disappointment
Atle Lie McGrath, who leads the World Cup discipline standings, was in strong contention after a remarkable win in Wengen last week. His success there made him one of only two skiers this season to achieve multiple slalom victories, positioning him as a leading contender for the upcoming February 16 race at the Milan Cortina Olympics. However, McGrath faced disappointment on Sunday; he was 0.27 seconds behind Meillard at the first checkpoint before failing to navigate a gate.
“I’m obviously very disappointed and it hurts a lot,” McGrath reflected on his run. “I felt good at the start and was ready to push hard, but unexpected things can happen.”
Paco Rassat’s Challenge
Paco Rassat, the only other skier alongside McGrath to secure two wins this season, found himself in ninth place after the first run, needing to gain 0.95 seconds in the second run later in the day.
The excitement continues to build as the competition unfolds in this legendary ski racing venue.
