World Baseball Classic Opening
In a highly anticipated opening for the World Baseball Classic, Logan Webb, the star pitcher from the San Francisco Giants, has been announced as the starting pitcher for Team USA‘s first matchup against Brazil this Friday night. This confirmation comes straight from the team’s manager, Mark DeRosa.
Upcoming Pitching Lineup
Following Webb, attention will turn to Tarik Skubal, the reigning two-time American League Cy Young Award recipient, who is slated to take the mound on Saturday against Britain. Meanwhile, Paul Skenes, the National League’s Cy Young Award winner, is lined up to pitch on Monday when the U.S. team faces Mexico. On Tuesday, the final pool-play game against Italy is expected to feature New York Mets pitcher Nolan McLean, although his participation is uncertain due to an illness that kept him from Monday’s practice.
Pitching Strategy and Preparation
DeRosa outlined the team’s pitching strategy, emphasizing that while there are guidelines in place regarding pitch counts during the tournament, players also have specific days they must pitch to adequately prepare for the Major League Baseball opening day. This highlights the balancing act between international competition and regular-season expectations.
Exhibition Games
Before heading to the action in Houston for their WBC opener against Brazil, the U.S. squad will engage in two exhibition games in Arizona scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. During these games, Paul Skenes is anticipated to start against the Giants, with other pitchers including Matthew Boyd, Gabe Speier, David Bednar, Griffin Jax, and Mason Miller also expected to see action.
Skubal’s Participation
It’s notable that Skubal is likely to make only one appearance for Team USA before returning to his Major League team, the Detroit Tigers, to continue his preparations for spring training.
