Logan O’Connor’s Comeback Highlighted by Critical Goal in Avalanche’s Playoff Win Over Kings

Logan O’Connor’s Thrilling Return

In a thrilling aftermath of his long-awaited return, Logan O’Connor scored a pivotal goal for the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday, leading them to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in the opening match of their playoff series. After seeing a second-period goal disallowed due to goaltender interference, O’Connor finally secured his much-anticipated goal in the third period, which significantly contributed to his team’s win.

“I’m super happy to finally get that out of the way,”

O’Connor expressed, reflecting on his journey back to the ice.

O’Connor’s Journey Back

O’Connor’s struggle has been considerable since scoring in the playoffs against Dallas on April 26. Following hip surgery in June, his return to full health was delayed, causing his season debut to be pushed back until March 24. In the regular season, he managed only 13 games, registering two assists.

Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog, who himself faced a lengthy recovery from a knee injury before rejoining the team last year, empathized with O’Connor’s struggle:

“We kept telling him to save those goals for when we really needed him. Tonight was one of those times.”

Key Moments in the Game

O’Connor capitalized on a breakdown in the Kings’ defense early in the third period, seizing a loose puck and deftly lifting a shot past goaltender Anton Forsberg, extending Colorado’s lead to 2-0 despite the Kings later trimming the margin with a late goal. His exuberant celebration, lifting his stick and receiving overwhelming support from teammates, underscored the significance of the moment.

Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar praised O’Connor’s perseverance, recognizing the anguish that comes from being sidelined.

“Being out of the lineup is the worst thing for a player because you just want to help and make an impact,”

Bednar said, highlighting O’Connor’s importance to the team.

Impact on the Team

O’Connor’s significant presence was felt throughout the match, even during a brief ice time of just under 10 minutes, where he managed his only shot on goal, showcasing the energy that his teammates missed.

“He brings that energy she’s known for, pushing us through those big moments,”

noted goaltender Scott Wedgewood, who had 24 saves in his playoff debut.

Earlier, O’Connor had a close chance in the second period, which was ruled out due to contact made by teammate Jack Drury with Forsberg. Although the Avalanche challenged the decision, the original call stood, limiting their momentum. Reflecting on the disallowed goal, O’Connor stated,

“I hoped we’d get that one back following the challenge. We did well to prevent them from gaining momentum after that.”

A Celebration of Hard Work

Recently, O’Connor experienced a significant milestone when his college team, the University of Denver, clinched its 11th NCAA championship title just the previous weekend. His contribution in this playoff game was a testament to his determination, as the home crowd erupted in cheers when he found the back of the net—a moment celebrated not just for the score, but for the hard work and dedication he put into making his return a reality.

“It was just great for OC to see that go in,”

Drury added.

“He has worked really hard to come back and has shown his value over the last few games. It’s wonderful to see him succeed.”
