Historic Transfer of Lizbeth Ovalle to Orlando Pride
In a groundbreaking move, Lizbeth Ovalle, an international star from Mexico, has officially joined the Orlando Pride, solidifying her status with a remarkable transfer fee reported at $1.5 million, making it a historic deal in women’s soccer. This agreement, which runs through 2027, includes an option for an additional year in 2028, as confirmed by the NWSL team on Thursday. Some reports, however, speculate that the fee could be as high as $2 million.
Setting New Records
This transfer sets a new benchmark, as Ovalle is now recognized as the first Mexican player of any gender to hold the record for the highest transfer fee. The previous record was held by Canadian player Olivia Smith, who made headlines in August when she transferred to Arsenal for approximately £1 million, equivalent to around $1.34 million, marking a historic moment for women’s football.
Owner’s Commitment and Player’s Ambition
Mark Wilf, the owner of Orlando Pride, expressed excitement over the signing, stating, “We are deeply committed to building championship-caliber teams year after year, and this landmark signing is a reflection of that focus. Jacquie is a world-class talent and a proven winner, and her arrival in Orlando marks another step on our journey to position the Pride among the elite clubs in global women’s soccer. We’re proud to lead the way in investing in the women’s game, not just for today’s success but to shape the future of the sport for generations to come.”
The contract also includes a provision for a 10% sell-on fee to Liga MX’s Femenil Tigres, where Ovalle spent her entire professional career since debuting in 2017.
Ovalle, who has gathered six Liga MX Femenil titles and three Campeon de Campeonas trophies during her time with Tigres, expressed her enthusiasm about joining Orlando, stating, “I’m very happy to join Orlando Pride. I’m coming with the clear objective of winning titles and leaving a mark with the Club. I’m ready to give it my all and help Orlando Pride continue to be a leading team.”
International Recognition and Market Value
Prior to this transfer, the talented 25-year-old winger was also considered by FC Barcelona, underlining her value in the global market. She joins the NWSL champions, who currently stand third in the league table with an impressive record of 8 wins, 4 draws, and 4 losses.
With over 50 caps for the Mexican national team, Ovalle has made notable contributions, such as scoring a memorable opening goal in a historic victory over the U.S. women’s national team during the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup, where Mexico reached the semifinals. She was also recognized as part of the best XI in the same tournament. During this transfer window, sources state that Ovalle had multiple offers on the table, with around six NWSL clubs competing for her services.
NWSL Transfer Regulations
In addition, it’s noteworthy that the NWSL operates within a set annual net transfer spending threshold, which this year is $550,000 per team. Earlier this year, the Pride managed to transfer Brazilian midfielder Adriana to Al Qadsiah FC for $500,000, a deal structured for two years, which allows Orlando additional flexibility for future transfers.
