Liverpool Football Club Preseason Training
Liverpool Football Club is set to kick off its preseason training on Tuesday, after the tragic loss of forward Diogo Jota. The 28-year-old player, along with his 25-year-old brother André Silva, tragically passed away in a car accident in northwest Spain last week, according to reports from ESPN.
Tributes and Adjusted Plans
In response to this devastating news, the club’s head coach Arne Slot and several players, including team captain Virgil van Dijk, attended the funeral of the Jota brothers in Gondomar, Portugal, on Saturday.
Originally, the squad was scheduled to report for preseason testing on Friday; however, those plans were adjusted out of respect for Jota’s passing. Now, the team is expected to gather at the AXA Training Centre to start preparing for the upcoming season.
Upcoming Matches and Community Response
As Premier League champions, Liverpool is gearing up for a preseason friendly match against Championship team Preston North End, set to take place at Deepdale this Sunday. Yet, uncertainties linger regarding the event’s status amidst the mourning period.
Since the announcement of the brothers’ deaths, Anfield has been flooded with tributes, including thousands of heartfelt messages and floral arrangements left by fans to honor the memory of Jota and Silva. The football community feels the weight of this tragic event, with Liverpool referring to the brothers’ loss as an “unimaginable” tragedy. Virgil van Dijk expressed his sorrow, stating he is “absolutely devastated and in total disbelief.”
