Liverpool FC Honors Diogo Jota
Liverpool Football Club is set to honor the late Diogo Jota with a memorial sculpture, which will serve as a lasting tribute at Anfield. This initiative follows the tragic passing of Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, in a car accident in Spain earlier this month, which prompted an outpouring of grief from fans.
Commemorative Initiatives
To commemorate Jota, who netted 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club, Liverpool’s players will proudly don a ‘Forever 20’ emblem on their shirts and jackets throughout the 2025-26 season. The LFC Foundation, the club’s official charitable organization, will also initiate a grassroots football program named in his honor.
In the wake of the tragedy, thousands of heartfelt tributes were placed outside Anfield. These included flowers, jerseys, scarves, hats, artwork, flags, and banners, all of which club staff have been meticulously collecting and storing. The floral arrangements will be composted for use in flowerbeds across the club’s grounds, while the remaining items will be recycled by a specialized company, contributing materials to the construction of the new memorial sculpture. While specific designs are still under consideration, one concept features the number 20 as a central motif.
Temporary Memorial and Tribute Events
Furthermore, in recognition of Jota’s impact, a temporary memorial space has been established outside Anfield’s Main Stand, allowing fans to continue expressing their condolences.
During Liverpool’s pre-season tour in Asia, players will wear a unique ‘Diogo J 20’ patch on their jerseys, with floral tributes to be laid before friendly matches in Hong Kong, Yokohama, and back at Anfield. The ‘Forever 20’ symbol will also be incorporated into the players’ kits, which are transitioning from Nike to Adidas on August 1. Fans wishing to pay tribute can customize their shirts with ‘Diogo J 20’ at club outlets or the official online store, with proceeds benefiting the LFC Foundation.
A major tribute event is scheduled for the Premier League opener against Bournemouth on August 15, which will include a commemorative fan mosaic and a moment of silence. Moreover, the club has declared the permanent retirement of the No 20 jersey in memory of Jota, solidifying his legacy within Liverpool FC.
