Liverpool raises concerns with PGMOL over Van Dijk’s disallowed goal in defeat to Manchester City

Liverpool FC’s Concerns Over Disallowed Goal

Liverpool Football Club has reached out to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to express serious concerns regarding the controversial decision that led to the disallowed goal by Virgil van Dijk during their recent match against Manchester City. According to sources who spoke with ESPN, the match took place at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, where Liverpool suffered a 3-0 defeat.

Controversial Decision

In a pivotal moment late in the first half, Van Dijk appeared to have equalized by scoring from a corner, but the goal was overturned by the officials. The cause for disallowance was linked to Andy Robertson, who was positioned offside and was said to obstruct goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma‘s line of sight. This decision was confirmed by VAR official Michael Oliver, who supported the initial call made on the field. The Premier League’s match center communicated via X that Robertson’s action was considered a clear infringement “directly in front of the goalkeeper.”

Liverpool’s Analysis

However, the club’s analysis of various camera angles led them to conclude that Robertson’s position did not actually obstruct Donnarumma’s view. Liverpool asserts that the interpretation of Law 11 concerning offside offenses should not have warranted the goal being disallowed, as they believe none of the necessary conditions for such a ruling were satisfied.

Current Standings

Following this match, Liverpool now finds themselves in eighth place in the Premier League standings, trailing league leaders Arsenal by eight points. This recent setback against Manchester City further compounds their challenges this season, showcasing the ongoing struggles they face on the pitch.
