Messi’s Potential Absence from the 2026 World Cup

The speculation surrounding Lionel Messi‘s potential absence from the 2026 World Cup has prompted Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, to clarify the situation. Scaloni confirmed that Messi, who leads the national team, is in no hurry to make a definitive choice about his participation in the tournament, stating that the captain will carefully consider his options before making a final call.

Recent Performance and Emotional Farewell

Messi last represented Argentina in a competitive match on September 4, securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Venezuela during a CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying match at Estadio Monumental. After the game, he emotionally waved goodbye to fans, leaving his future in doubt as he refrained from committing to the World Cup during a post-match interview.

“I feel hopeful and motivated for the tournament. As I always say, I am taking it day by day and focusing on how I feel,”

Messi expressed.

Physical and Mental Well-Being

The renowned forward emphasized the importance of his physical and mental well-being, saying,

“When I feel good, it’s enjoyable for me. However, if I’m not feeling up to it, I don’t want to participate. So, I’ll evaluate how I feel as the time approaches. Hopefully, I’ll have a good preseason and conclude my MLS season well before I decide.”

Scaloni’s Perspective

Scaloni commented on the matter, noting that he understands Messi’s desire for ample time to reflect on his future and maintains that whatever conclusion Messi reaches will be acceptable.

“I’m not entirely sure about the makeup of the squad just yet. We’re still several months away from the World Cup, and many variables will come into play,”

Scaloni elaborated. He acknowledged having not discussed the World Cup specifically with Messi and confirmed that Messi will not participate in the upcoming qualifier against Ecuador, prioritizing his recovery from a hamstring injury instead.

Argentina’s World Cup Qualification

Argentina has already secured their spot in the World Cup, leading the CONMEBOL qualifying standings with 38 points from 17 matches. Messi noted that after discussions with Scaloni, it was decided he would rest, avoiding travel to Ecuador to focus on his recovery, as he aims to help lead Inter Miami to success in the MLS.

“We’re focused on winning, and with a friendly match scheduled in October, we will regroup then,”

Messi added.

Looking Ahead

As he returns to Miami, Messi will prepare for the critical phase of the MLS season, keeping his fans and teammates hopeful for what his decision regarding the World Cup will be.
