Lionel Messi to Return from Suspension with Renewed Energy for Leagues Cup

Optimism for Messi’s Return

Javier Mascherano, the head coach of Inter Miami CF, expressed optimism that Lionel Messi will be fueled with renewed motivation as the team prepares to kick off the 2025 Leagues Cup tournament. Messi will be available after serving a one-match suspension following his absence from the MLS All-Star game. The team’s first game in the Leagues Cup is set for Wednesday night against Atlas, a Liga MX opponent, at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Mascherano on Messi’s Suspension

Mascherano explained the situation, saying,

“We certainly didn’t anticipate the suspension, especially after the Cincinnati match, but perhaps it will ultimately benefit us. Messi has played many consecutive matches, and this break was necessary to help him recharge for the demanding schedule ahead. With the Leagues Cup and MLS matches lined up, a little rest can be advantageous, allowing him to come back fresher.”

Team Updates

Both Messi and veteran Jordi Alba are expected to take the field for the upcoming game, with Mascherano making light of yesterday’s developments:

“If they don’t issue any further suspensions, we’ll have both Jordi and Messi available to us.”

Rodrigo De Paul’s Situation

On the topic of new acquisition Rodrigo De Paul, who previously celebrated a World Cup victory with Messi, he is still waiting for his visa approval and has not yet joined the team for training. However, Mascherano confirmed,

“As soon as we receive the necessary paperwork, we will include him in the roster. He is an exceptional player who can bring various tactical options to our side. He has an excellent understanding with Leo, which is immensely beneficial for our squad. Both Rodrigo and Messi are crucial players, and I hope Rodrigo can make a significant impact for us too.”

Though De Paul has been training individually, Mascherano noted,

“He’s been maintaining his fitness and doing well on his own. Once we finalize the necessary permits, we will integrate him into the main group.”

Previous Leagues Cup Performance

Inter Miami previously celebrated winning the inaugural Leagues Cup last year under the management of Gerardo Martino and faced an early exit in the 2024 round of 16 against the Columbus Crew.
