Lionel Messi Receives Key to Miami in Ceremony Led by Mayor Suarez

Messi Honored with Key to Miami

In a celebratory event held at the Kaseya Center, Lionel Messi was honored with the key to Miami by Mayor Francis Suarez on Wednesday evening following his address at the American Business Forum. Mayor Suarez expressed profound gratitude for Messi’s contributions to the city, stating,

“I have long wanted to present you with this key for all that you’ve done for our grand city, our country, and the sport of soccer. Thank you.”

Transformative Impact on Inter Miami

Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami on July 15, 2023, marked a transformative moment for the team, as he quickly led them to their inaugural trophy, the Leagues Cup, just days after his debut. Since joining the club, he has also helped secure the 2024 Supporters’ Shield and achieved a record for the most points earned in a single MLS season.

During the presentation, Jorge Mas, one of the co-owners of Inter Miami, remarked,

“This is a small gift from the city that has captured our hearts. It is a warm welcome not just to you, but to your wife Antonella and your beautiful family, ensuring you feel at home here.”

Messi’s Individual Accolades

On an individual level, Messi’s accolades include winning the 2024 MLS MVP and the 2025 Golden Boot, with a nomination for the 2025 MVP title still pending. Although his initial contract with Inter Miami is set to expire after the 2025 season, Messi has recently extended his commitment to the club by signing a three-year deal to remain on board until 2028.

Expressing his appreciation for the recognition, Messi said,

“I feel very honored by this. We feel loved and grateful to be living in this city, and receiving this distinction is a great honor.”

Reflections on His Career Journey

Reflecting on his career journey, Messi reminisced about the challenging transition after leaving Barcelona, the only home he had known since moving there at 13. He said,

“Moving to Paris was tough because we had everything there – family, the kids – it was our whole lives. It’s never easy to adjust to a completely new environment. But in Miami, everything has been spectacular. From day one, the welcome has been amazing.”

Future Developments and Upcoming Matches

Additionally, his comments coincided with news from Inter Miami regarding the ongoing construction of a new stadium near Miami International Airport, which is nearing a significant construction milestone.

“I’m excited for this place to be finished. I look forward to playing here,”

he added.

Before this momentous award and on the eve of their next match, Inter Miami is set to face Nashville SC in the decisive final match of their first-round playoff series this Saturday, which will take place at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
