Lindsey Vonn reveals she faced possible amputation of left leg after harrowing Olympic crash

Shocking Revelation from Lindsey Vonn

VAIL, Colo. — In a shocking revelation, American alpine skiing star Lindsey Vonn disclosed that she came perilously close to losing her left leg during a harrowing accident in the women’s downhill event at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Through a heartfelt Instagram update shared on Monday, the 41-year-old athlete detailed the extent of her injuries, which far exceeded the initial tibia fracture she sustained when she clipped a gate and veered off course just seconds into her run on February 8.

Details of the Accident

The traumatic fall caused severe complications, including a life-threatening condition known as compartment syndrome. This condition results from heightened pressure within a muscle compartment, which can arise from bleeding or swelling. If untreated, the elevated pressure can obstruct blood flow, potentially resulting in irreversible damage. Vonn explained,

“When there’s extreme trauma to a specific area, the accumulation of blood can constrict various tissues leading to severe complications.”

Emergency Intervention

Dr. Tom Hackett, her orthopedic surgeon and a vital member of Team USA, performed an emergency fasciotomy to relieve the pressure and save her leg. Vonn expressed immense gratitude towards him, stating,

“He filleted it open, allowing my leg to breathe, and ultimately saved my future.”

Vonn noted that Hackett was specifically in Cortina to assist her following a recent ACL tear in her left knee, which underscores the critical timing of his presence at the event.

“If I hadn’t sustained that injury, he wouldn’t have been there to intervene in my moment of crisis,”

she reflected.

Recovery Journey

In addition to her tibia fracture, Vonn also sustained injuries to her right ankle from the crash. She shared with her followers that despite the severity of her injuries, she has now been discharged from the hospital and is beginning her recovery journey. Vonn’s skiing career has been marked by both triumph and adversity, and this incident adds another chapter to her remarkable story in the sport.
