Lin Yu-ting navigates gender debate to reach semifinals at Asian boxing championships

Lin Yu-ting Advances in Asian Boxing Championships

In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Olympic gold medallist Lin Yu-ting continued to carve out a path at the Asian boxing championships, solidifying her position in the semifinals on Friday. This marks Lin’s first significant competition since World Boxing verified her gender status following a genetic test.

Impressive Performances

Competing in the 60-kilogram lightweight category, Lin, who previously captured the featherweight title at the 2024 Paris Olympics, showcased her skills with a decisive 5-0 victory over Thailand’s Thananya Somnuek in her opener early in the week. She followed that impressive performance with another flawless win against Japan’s top-seeded Ayaka Taguchi, claiming every round by unanimous decision across all five judges’ scorecards.

Eligibility and Regulations

Now 30 years old, Lin has not taken to the international stage since her Olympic triumph, as World Boxing took over the governing role of the sport last year, instituting a new policy that requires boxers to pass a genetic test identifying the presence of a Y chromosome before being deemed eligible to compete. Lin’s eligibility was confirmed on March 19 of this year.

While it remains uncertain if further testing will be mandated for Lin to participate in future Olympic events, the International Olympic Committee recently announced new regulations that would see transgender athletes banned from competing, alongside a requirement for a one-time gene test during an athlete’s career.

Looking Ahead

Notably, Lin and Algeria’s Imane Khelif both secured gold at the Paris Games amid ongoing debates regarding gender standards in sports, which have been the source of much political discourse.

Lin is looking ahead to her next bout in the semifinals scheduled for Monday, where she aims to continue her strong showing in these championships.
