Lily Yohannes Signs with OL Lyonnes
Lily Yohannes, a promising midfielder for the United States women’s national soccer team, has officially committed to a three-year deal with French club OL Lyonnes, as confirmed by the team on Monday. The 18-year-old star, who previously played for Ajax, will stay with Lyonnes until June 30, 2028. The financial aspects of the move include a reported transfer fee of approximately €450,000 (around $526,000), with Ajax set to receive a portion of any future sale involving Yohannes.
International Career and Background
Having represented the USWNT eight times, Yohannes made a striking entrance into international play, scoring just ten minutes into her debut match in June 2024 at the age of 17. In addition to her commitment to the United States, she had been contemplating her international future, with discussions of aligning with the Netherlands due to her family’s roots and her quest for Dutch citizenship. However, she ultimately chose to represent the U.S., declaring her decision in November.
Yohannes has a unique background; she was born in Virginia but moved to the Netherlands when she was 10 years old. She showcased her talent early by signing a professional contract with Ajax at the age of 15. Remarkably, at just 16, she became the youngest player to start a UEFA Women’s Champions League match, taking the field in a notable victory against Paris Saint-Germain in 2023.
Future Prospects
Interest in Yohannes has been keen, with English club Chelsea also vying for her signature before she decided on Lyonnes. USWNT head coach Emma Hayes praised Yohannes’s maturity and potential earlier this year, emphasizing her importance to the team’s future while acknowledging the need for patience as she continues her development within the sport.
