Lewandowski Steps Back from International Matches
In a significant development in Polish football, Robert Lewandowski, the prominent striker for FC Barcelona, has declared that he will not participate in international matches for Poland while Michał Probierz serves as head coach. The 36-year-old forward cited “physical and mental tiredness” stemming from a demanding season in La Liga as his reason for stepping back during the current international fixtures.
New Captain Appointed
Consequently, *Probierz has named Piotr Zieliński* of Internazionale as the new captain for the national team, taking over from Lewandowski. Although Lewandowski has announced his temporary withdrawal from international competition, he remains open to a possible return in the future.
“Given the circumstances and the trust I have lost in the coach, I’ve decided to resign from the national team for as long as he is in charge,” Lewandowski explained in a post on social media.
He expressed a desire to potentially play again for what he describes as “the best fans in the world.”
Impact of Injury and Performance
The star forward’s decision follows an injury that kept him sidelined during pivotal matches at the season’s end, including the UEFA Champions League semifinal against Inter Milan and the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid. He did make a comeback for the last three games of the season, contributing two goals as Barcelona secured the La Liga title.
However, he opted out of international duty for an upcoming friendly against Moldova and a crucial World Cup qualifier against Finland.
Record and Future for Polish National Team
Earlier statements made by Lewandowski emphasized his discomfort, particularly on a mental level, after communicating with coach Probierz about his physical readiness. Holding the records for the most appearances (158 caps) and goals (85 goals) for the Polish national team, Lewandowski’s absence will be notable as Poland moves forward.
The Polish squad, currently competing in Group G, has won their first two qualifiers leading up to a match against Finland.
Probierz’s Coaching Tenure
Probierz has been coaching the national team since 2023 following a successful spell with the U21 side. He achieved qualification for Euro 2024 but faced criticism as Poland exited in the group stage without securing a victory. Now, with Lewandowski stepping away from the national colors, the team will need to navigate their qualifying campaign without one of their most decorated players.
