Chelsea’s Triumph at the Club World Cup
Levi Colwill, a defender for Chelsea, believes the Club World Cup may eclipse the Champions League in importance in the years to come. The 22-year-old was a key player in Chelsea’s impressive 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday. This unexpected triumph over the UEFA Champions League winners PSG, who had previously allowed only one goal in the tournament and had decisively defeated Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-finals, marks a significant achievement for the club.
“We delivered an incredible performance and deserve the recognition for it,” Colwill stated in a post-match interview. He emphasized that the team’s success could lead to greater appreciation in the future. “If we continue to secure trophies, the accolades will follow, but only time will tell.”
This latest victory adds to Chelsea’s accolades, having claimed the Conference League title in late May—signifying their first trophy since the BlueCo group’s acquisition of the club in 2022, and their first following their Champions League success in 2021, which had qualified them for the revamped Club World Cup.
Colwill’s Vision for the Future
Colwill expressed his enthusiasm for the tournament, predicting, “In time, I believe this competition will be regarded as the premier trophy, even surpassing the Champions League. Being the first team to win it adds to that excitement. I’ve truly enjoyed playing frequently, competing in sold-out stadiums, and challenging teams we might not usually encounter.
“Admittedly, my perspective might be influenced by our victory, but it’s been a wonderful experience. This is the most significant tournament I have won. Initially, I felt pressure, anticipating it to be the largest match I’ve ever played in, but I will cherish this day for years to come.”
Looking Ahead
After the match, Chelsea’s head coach Enzo Maresca informed DAZN that the team would enjoy a three-week holiday before commencing their pre-season training for the upcoming 2025-26 season. This season is particularly notable as it marks Chelsea’s return to the Champions League following a three-year hiatus, originating from their fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season under Maresca’s leadership.
When asked about Chelsea’s potential to be strong contenders for both the Premier League and Champions League in the next season, Colwill confidently affirmed,
“Absolutely. At the onset of this tournament, I expressed our goal to win it, and people regarded me as overly ambitious. I’ll continue to maintain that assertion for the Premier League and Champions League starting next season. I believe we’re prepared, and only time will reveal the outcome.”
