Lawrence Okolie Questions Safety of Potential Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua Fight

Concerns Over Proposed Matchup

Lawrence Okolie, the former WBO cruiserweight champion, has expressed serious reservations about the proposed boxing match between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua, labeling it as both impractical and hazardous. Okolie, who has achieved two-weight champion status by also securing the WBC bridgerweight title, emphasizes the significant health risks involved in such a contest given Joshua’s considerable physical attributes.

Health Risks and Experience Disparity

“I can’t see it happening,” Okolie remarked during an interview with talkSPORT, highlighting his experience as a former unified heavyweight world champion and his belief that a bout against Paul does not align with the sport’s safety standards.

He further pointed out the dramatic difference in experience and skill between Paul and an elite heavyweight like Joshua.

“He [Jake Paul] fits into the cruiserweight category, while Anthony Joshua is an exceptionally large and powerful heavyweight,” he explained. “If Joshua were to utilize his full potential, the risk of serious injury extends beyond just a knockout.”

Discussion vs. Reality

Although Okolie regards the matchup as unlikely, he acknowledged that it has generated considerable discussion, though he maintains it should remain a topic of casual conversation rather than a viable competition.

“I can’t personally envision this fight, but I suppose it’s an interesting conversation starter,” Okolie stated, conveying his discomfort with the idea of the match being sanctioned.

Future Prospects

Jake Paul has gained traction in the boxing world, recently being ranked among the top 15 by the WBA in the cruiserweight division and actively pursuing a world title opportunity as early as 2025. Meanwhile, Joshua is expected to make his return in the winter following recovery from elbow surgery, though speculation surrounds his future in the sport and the likelihood of facing Paul before Joshua’s retirement remains quite low. In Okolie’s view, any discussions about this fantasy fight should remain within the realm of social media debates rather than transitioning into actual boxing events.
