Laughton Eager for Extension, While Kuzmenko’s Future Remains Uncertain with Kings

Contract Negotiations Ahead for Kings Forwards

As the summer approaches, Los Angeles Kings forwards Andrei Kuzmenko and Scott Laughton are set to enter contract negotiations as they become unrestricted free agents. During a recent end-of-season media conference, both players addressed their potential futures with the Kings, offering contrasting outlooks.

Scott Laughton’s Commitment

Scott Laughton, who joined the Kings from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the trade deadline, expressed significant interest in remaining with the team. Having been in Los Angeles for a short period, Laughton praised the opportunity he was given, stating:

“The interest level is high for me, for sure. The opportunity I was given here, the guys here, the staff, the way I was treated, my family came down and absolutely loved it… so yeah, the interest level is high.”

In his brief stint with the Kings, Laughton participated in 21 games, scoring five goals and tallying a total of eight points, while averaging over 15 minutes of ice time—an increase from his time with Toronto.

Interestingly, recent reports suggest that the Kings are inclined to pursue Laughton’s return. NHL insider David Pagnotta noted that discussions about a potential contract renewal hinge not only on Laughton’s interest but also on clarity regarding the team’s coaching situation. Following a mid-season shift in coaching, with D.J. Smith stepping in as interim coach after Jim Hiller‘s dismissal, General Manager Ken Holland is expected to soon address whether Smith will continue with the team.

Andrei Kuzmenko’s Uncertainty

On the other hand, Andrei Kuzmenko‘s future remains less certain. The 30-year-old winger offered a vague response about his intentions, stating simply:

“We’ll see”

when asked about a contract extension with the Kings. Kuzmenko’s season concluded with him registering 13 goals and 25 points in 52 games after joining the team last summer on a one-year deal worth a $4.3 million cap hit. Should he decide to leave, he would be switching teams for the fifth time in just three years, raising questions about his stability within the league.

Brandt Clarke’s Situation

Additionally, Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke is also navigating similar uncertainties as a restricted free agent, having yet to secure an extension. During the same media session, Clarke elaborated on the negotiations surrounding his status and his aspirations moving forward.

Transitioning from Anze Kopitar’s Era

The Kings recently closed a chapter with Anze Kopitar’s retirement following a playoff elimination at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche, marking a pivotal moment for the franchise. As Los Angeles transitions from this era of hockey, decisions regarding players like Laughton and Kuzmenko will be crucial in shaping the team’s future.
