LeBron James’ Training Camp Update
The Los Angeles Lakers have kicked off their training camp, but star player LeBron James will not be joining his teammates on the court just yet due to a minor nerve issue affecting his glute, as shared by Lakers head coach JJ Redick.
Historic 23rd Season
With his 41st birthday approaching in December, James is on the brink of making history by being the first NBA player to enter his 23rd season when the Lakers face the Golden State Warriors in just a few weeks.
Redick remarked that the aim is for James to be ready in time for the season opener against the Warriors, although he did leave the possibility open for James to play in one of the preseason games, which total six for the Lakers.
Gradual Preparations
Considering James is entering a legendary 23rd year, Redick noted that his preparations will be more gradual this time around, acknowledging the accumulated wear and tear on his body from over two decades of professional play.
Last Season’s Performance
Last season, the four-time champion averaged impressive stats of 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds. After proclaiming his desire to play all 82 games last season, James started strong with 23 consecutive games until he experienced foot issues in December that sidelined him for two games. During the previous preseason, he participated in three out of six games.
Preseason Outlook
L.A.’s preseason is set to begin against the Phoenix Suns, but sources indicate that James will miss that game. Redick expressed hope that James could be ready for at least one of the upcoming exhibition matchups.
Though absent from practice, James’ influence was still felt by his younger teammates; guard Austin Reaves remarked on James’ role as a vocal leader, even from the sidelines.
Injury Management
In addition to James, the Lakers are also managing injuries for Gabe Vincent, Marcus Smart, and rookie Adou Thiero, with Vincent expected to be cleared for the preseason opener. As for players who were fully engaged in the first practice, Redick humorously mentioned Luka Doncic, drawing a smile from the assembled media.
This cautious approach with James is part of a larger strategy aimed at ensuring he remains healthy for a significant postseason run.
