Los Angeles Lakers’ Court Safety Concerns
In a precautionary move, the Los Angeles Lakers have decided not to utilize their distinctive NBA Cup court for their upcoming game against the Dallas Mavericks, citing safety concerns over the court’s slippery surface. This decision follows a troubling revelation during their Tuesday matchup with the Clippers, where Lakers’ forward Luka Doncic expressed that the court felt dangerously slick post-game.

Following their win, the Lakers promptly alerted the league about the hazardous conditions, and technicians confirmed that the court was not suitable for play during the ongoing group stage, according to a team representative.
Issues with the NBA Cup Court
Designed to differentiate the in-season tournament from regular games, the vibrant yellow court was intended to add a unique flair to competing teams. However, issues arose during pregame warmups, as noted by Lakers forward Rui Hachimura, who described the court as distinctly “oily and slippery,” resulting in several players losing their footing.
Lakers’ Performance and Player Updates
Despite this setback, the Lakers have successfully clinched a spot in the NBA Cup knockout stage, carrying a perfect 3-0 record in West Group B and aiming for a win against Dallas to secure home-court advantage in the quarterfinals scheduled to commence on December 9th.
In a separate yet anticipated development, center Deandre Ayton has been cleared to participate in the game, having previously missed Tuesday’s contest due to a knee contusion. Ayton sustained the injury during a clash with the Utah Jazz but received positive news following an MRI that showed no severe damage, allowing him to manage the pain with treatment and play.
On the other hand, Anthony Davis, who last competed on October 29, is also making a comeback. After a calf injury sidelined him, Davis is expected to face the Mavericks in Los Angeles for the first time since his trade last year, which sent him to Dallas and brought Doncic to the Lakers.
However, Lakers guard Marcus Smart’s status is uncertain as he has been marked doubtful with back spasms, adding another layer of unpredictability to the team’s lineup.
As the Lakers navigate their way through these challenges, they remain focused on maintaining their momentum and ensuring player safety as they proceed in this unique tournament format.
