Kris Knoblauch’s contract with the Edmonton Oilers extended until 2028-29

Edmonton Oilers Extend Head Coach Kris Knoblauch’s Contract

In a significant move, the Edmonton Oilers have decided to extend the contract of head coach Kris Knoblauch for an additional three years, ensuring his leadership through the 2028-29 NHL season. Knoblauch took the reins of the team on November 12, 2023, and has since steered the Oilers to back-to-back appearances in the Stanley Cup finals.

Coaching Journey and Achievements

His journey with the club began after a rough start to the 2023-24 season, where the team struggled with a 3-9-1 record under former coach Jay Woodcroft.

Under Knoblauch’s guidance, the Oilers rebounded spectacularly, concluding the regular season with an impressive 48-16-5 record. They advanced to the Stanley Cup finals but were edged out in a thrilling seven-game series against the Florida Panthers. The following season proved to be another promising chapter for Knoblauch, who finished with a 48-29-5 record and successfully led the Oilers through the playoffs, where they achieved a 12-4 record, though they ultimately fell again to the Panthers, this time in six games.

Background and Experience

At 47 years old, Knoblauch hails from Imperial, Saskatchewan, and has substantial coaching experience, having spent five seasons with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers, before making his NHL debut with the Oilers. His prior coaching roles include serving as an assistant with the Philadelphia Flyers from 2017 to 2019 and mentoring current Oilers captain Connor McDavid during their time with the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League.

Knoblauch’s journey began in junior hockey with the Edmonton Ice in the WHL, followed by five years at the University of Alberta, where his playing career took shape.
