The Knicks’ Coaching Search
The New York Knicks are currently on the lookout for a new head coach following the unexpected dismissal of Tom Thibodeau last week, even after he successfully took the team to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in a quarter-century.
Challenges in Interviewing Candidates
Their efforts to interview two prominent coaches have been thwarted, as sources indicate that the Knicks requested to meet with Ime Udoka of the Houston Rockets and Chris Finch of the Minnesota Timberwolves, both of whom had commendable seasons for their franchises. However, both requests were turned down.
The Rockets ended their playoff drought this past season by securing the second seed in the Western Conference, while the Timberwolves also had a notable year, advancing to their second consecutive conference finals.
Future Prospects
Although the Knicks could seek permission to talk to other head coaches still active in their roles, they have yet to approach Dallas Mavericks Jason Kidd about the position. Reports suggest that if they were to do so, the Mavericks would likely refuse their request as well.
Additionally, it has been noted that Jay Wright, who coached several core Knicks players during his time at Villanova, has expressed disinterest in taking the coaching role for New York, further narrowing the Knicks’ options in their search for a head coach.
The news regarding the refusals from the Rockets and Timberwolves was initially reported by SNY, with the information about the Wolves’ decision also being shared by podcast host Mike Francesa.
