Kings Strengthen Roster by Trading for Center Scott Laughton from Maple Leafs

NHL Trade Deadline Update

In a notable move as the NHL trade deadline approached, the Los Angeles Kings, under the direction of General Manager Ken Holland, completed a second trade on the same day. As reported by Mayor’s Manor, the Kings have successfully obtained center Scott Laughton from the Toronto Maple Leafs. This acquisition was subsequently confirmed by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Trade Details

In return, the Kings have agreed to send a conditional third-round draft pick to Toronto. Interestingly, this pick could elevate to a second-round selection if Los Angeles qualifies for the Stanley Cup playoffs. As of the trade deadline, the Kings were trailing the Seattle Kraken by three points for the second wild-card position in the Western Conference.

Player Profile: Scott Laughton

Laughton, now 31, has played an integral role as a penalty killer with the Maple Leafs this season. He is recognized for his leadership skills and competitive nature, mostly functioning as a bottom-six center, either on the third or fourth line.

This marks a shift from Laughton’s previous trade, where he was moved to the Maple Leafs from the Philadelphia Flyers for a first-round pick and prospect Nikita Grebenkin at last year’s deadline. Now, the Kings acquire him at a considerably reduced price.

Season Performance

During the current season, Laughton has participated in 43 games, recording eight goals and a total of 12 points, although he holds a minus-three rating. He faced a brief period on the sidelines earlier in the season due to an upper-body injury and has recently been a healthy scratch in the last two games for the Maple Leafs. This decision was attributed to roster management, as Leafs GM Brad Treliving anticipated a trade.

Known for his essential role in penalty-killing situations, Laughton averages over two minutes of ice time while his team is shorthanded, highlighting his effectiveness in this aspect of play, particularly in faceoff situations.
