Los Angeles Kings Power Play Struggles
The Los Angeles Kings have struggled significantly with their power play since the start of the season, recording only a 16.2% success rate as of early November. From their season opener on October 7 until November 2, they finished among the bottom teams in power-play efficiency, having managed to score just six goals across 37 opportunities.
Recent Changes and Adjustments
However, a recent matchup against the Winnipeg Jets on November 4 led to a critical change in their power-play lineup. The Kings made a notable adjustment by introducing Corey Perry to their top power-play unit, a move aimed at reviving their scoring from the man advantage. Since this modification, the Kings have enjoyed a surge, scoring in each of their three subsequent games.
Coaching Decisions and Player Adjustments
Interestingly, head coach Jim Hiller is already considering further adjustments. He plans to swap Andrei Kuzmenko back into the top power-play slot, replacing Quinton Byfield who will transition to the second unit. Hiller articulated his belief that this shift could enhance both players’ effectiveness.
“We feel that’s his great strength that gets him going in his overall game…try to get him some more touches there and see if that can translate,”
he elaborated about Kuzmenko.
Negotiations and Future Outlook
Moreover, the Kings are currently at the negotiation table with forward Adrian Kempe, although early reports indicate that both sides are yet to align on terms.
As for Byfield, the young center exhibits a positive outlook on the decision, emphasizing the importance of getting the puck to the players in scoring positions. Hiller praised the combination of Byfield and defenseman Drew Doughty on the second unit as they look to leverage their respective strengths, with Clarke managing the backend. This tactical switch aims to create a more balanced distribution of shooting options on both power-play units.
In light of all these developments, the Kings will be eager to extend their recent success as they face off against the Montreal Canadiens, aiming for a fourth consecutive game with a power-play goal.
