Kings League, co-founded by Gerard Pique, plans U.S. debut by 2026

The Kings League: A New Era in Soccer

The Kings League, co-founded by former Barcelona star Gerard Pique, is gearing up to introduce its innovative seven-a-side soccer league in the United States by 2026.

Launch Plans and Strategic Focus

During a media event held in Paris, Kings League’s CEO Djamel Agaoua revealed plans for a potential launch at the end of this year or early next year, emphasizing a strategic focus on the East Coast due to logistics.

“We feel prepared to dive into the American market, which is a significant opportunity for us,”

he stated while attending the Kings World Cup Clubs final at La Défense Arena.

Global Reach and Investment

The Kings League, which started in 2022, has gained traction across Europe, reaching countries like Italy, Germany, France, and Brazil. The league is also looking to establish a league in the Middle East and Africa in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund later this year. The league intends to invest between €5-7 million ($5.8-$8.1 million) to break into new markets, with the U.S. operation expected to require an even larger budget.

Competitive Landscape

Despite facing competitors, such as the Baller League which has plans for a similar six-a-side format in the U.S., Pique believes that the introduction of rival leagues is not an obstacle.

“For example, India faced the Goa7 League, which vanished as soon as we arrived there. We’re not being deterred by competition; we have already seen success in Germany, despite the presence of similar concepts,”

he commented.

Innovative Rules and Future Prospects

Kings League’s unique rules, inspired by gaming mechanics, aim to enhance viewer engagement by incorporating elements like “President Penalties”, allowing team owners to participate in scoring opportunities. While the league has attracted significant investment, raising €60 million from backers last year, it has chosen to steer clear of the UK and China; the former due to underdeveloped streaming platforms and the latter due to stringent regulations regarding sports.

Engaging Younger Audiences

In an era where mini-leagues and condensed game formats are trending, Kings League is making significant strides to attract younger audiences and influencers, expanding the traditional boundaries of the sport.
