Kings’ Keegan Murray to undergo re-evaluation for ankle sprain as injury woes mount for team

Challenging Night for the Sacramento Kings

In a challenging night for the Sacramento Kings, forward Keegan Murray showcased his athleticism with a stunning one-handed dunk after blocking a shot from Bobby Portis, contributing to a 115-98 defeat against the Milwaukee Bucks. However, the joy of that moment was overshadowed when, late in the third quarter, Murray sustained yet another injury, compounding the difficulties of his fourth NBA season, which has seen the team struggle to maintain a healthy roster and currently holds one of the league’s poorest records at 8-28.

Injury Update

An MRI on Tuesday confirmed that the 25-year-old, previously selected fourth overall in the 2022 draft, is contending with a moderate sprain of his left ankle. The Kings anticipate re-evaluating him in a span of three to four weeks. This latest setback follows a sequence of prior injuries that have plagued Murray this season, including a recently returned calf problem that sidelined him for two games around New Year’s and an earlier torn UCL in his left thumb that kept him out for the entire first 15 games.

Details of the Injury

The injury to his ankle occurred during a drive towards the basket where he collided with Bucks center Myles Turner while attempting a pass to teammate Drew Eubanks. Following the failed play, Murray landed awkwardly and immediately reached for his distressed ankle before needing assistance to exit the court.

Season Performance

This season has been particularly tumultuous for Murray, who had recently signed a five-year, $140 million contract extension with the Kings. Unfortunately, he has only participated in 19 games out of the team’s 36, a stark contrast to his previous three seasons where he appeared in 233 out of 246 games. Murray is currently posting averages of 14.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game, although his shooting percentages from the field and beyond the arc are at career lows.

Team Injury Woes

Murray’s injury woes are not isolated within the team, as the Kings have faced chronic injury issues this season. Rookie center Maxime Raynaud also battled injury concerns during a recent loss to the Phoenix Suns and has been filling in for All-Star Domantas Sabonis, who is recuperating from a partially torn meniscus. Additionally, Zach LaVine, a two-time All-Star, has returned after a nine-game absence due to his own ankle injury.

Recent Performance

The Kings’ recent performance is alarming, as they have lost the last five matches, each by at least ten points, and recorded the worst point differential in the NBA at minus-12. The team is in desperate need of a turnaround amidst their ongoing health challenges and dwindling morale.
