Usman Nurmagomedov Reflects on Post-Fight Interaction with Khabib
Usman Nurmagomedov shared a lighthearted moment when recalling his post-fight interaction with his cousin, Khabib Nurmagomedov, following his recent victory over Paul Hughes in Dubai. After successfully defending his PFL lightweight world championship, Usman was met with congratulations from Khabib, who had a more serious message beneath his praise.
Khabib’s Advice on Training
The former UFC lightweight champion, known for his intense training regimen, urged Usman to prioritize training over relaxation right after the match.
“Initially, he was thrilled and congratulated me,” Usman recounted to BBC Sport. “However, he quickly reminded me that we need to stay focused on our training and not waste time resting. I asked for just a week off, and he agreed.”
Despite spending only a short period resting, Usman returned to training at Khabib’s insistence.
Usman’s Recent Title Defense
Khabib, who retired undefeated with a record of 29-0 in 2020, has since dedicated his life to coaching. Usman’s recent title defense against Hughes marked his second win against the Irish fighter. Although the bout was competitive, the judges scored the fight decisively in favor of Nurmagomedov with scores of 50-45, 49-46, and 48-47. Usman, however, believed the fight was much closer, affirming his view that he captured every round due to his effective striking and takedowns.
“I disagree with the 50-45 score; it should have been closer, like 48-46 or 48-47,” he asserted. “Those who truly know the sport realize it was a high-level contest.”
Hughes’ Acknowledgment and Future Prospects
In response to his defeat, Hughes acknowledged that he fell short on the night, admitting he didn’t perform up to the required standard. Throughout his training camp, Usman remained focused on the challenges presented by Hughes, stating he visualized their encounters before sleep and upon waking. He believes that this rivalry has only enhanced his skills as a fighter.
Looking forward, Nurmagomedov sees the possibility of Hughes becoming a champion himself, especially if he transitions to the UFC.
“Hughes possesses the talent to thrive in the UFC; he’s mentally tough and resilient,” Usman commented.
Usman’s Future Plans
As for his own future in the sport, Nurmagomedov plans to be back in competition within three months. He has notably called out Alfie Davis, the recent PFL lightweight tournament champion, who had once been considered a long shot. Davis expressed excitement about the prospective title clash, but Nurmagomedov doesn’t believe Davis’s outward enthusiasm fully reflects his mindset.
“I noticed his happiness about the matchup, but deep down, I know he’s not as confident as he appears. I intend to take his belt and wear it proudly,” Usman stated confidently.
