Keyshawn Davis Strips Title After Weigh-In Mishap Before Fight

Keyshawn Davis’s Weight Challenge

Keyshawn Davis’s hopes of defending his WBO lightweight title were dashed when he weighed in at 139.3 pounds, significantly exceeding the 135-pound limit by 4.3 pounds ahead of his fight with Edwin De Los Santos at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. Instead of trying to cut the excess weight, the 26-year-old fighter chose to relinquish his belt, citing that he had outgrown the lightweight division after four years of making weight.

“I outgrew the weight,” Davis, who maintains an impressive record of 13 wins and 9 knockouts, explained. “I was up late last night and early this morning trying to make the weight, but I outgrew it.”

Implications of the Weigh-In

As a result of his failure to make weight, only De Los Santos, boasting a record of 16 wins and 14 knockouts, will be eligible to claim the WBO title during their match. This fight was intended to mark Davis’s first title defense after he claimed the championship by defeating Denys Berinchyk in February. Despite this setback, Davis remains determined to compete in front of his hometown crowd.

“The show must go on,” indicating his readiness to fight despite the weight mishap.

Future Plans

Interestingly, Davis had already considered moving up to the junior welterweight category regardless of Saturday’s fight outcome.

“Honestly, I was going to 140 pounds after this anyway,” he revealed, underscoring his plans for the future.
