Keyshawn Davis on Gervonta “Tank” Davis
Keyshawn Davis recently expressed skepticism about the potential for a future lightweight unification match against Gervonta “Tank” Davis. During a conversation on The Ariel Helwani Show on Uncrowned, Davis made it clear that he feels “Tank” is focused on different priorities, particularly a lucrative bout against Jake Paul.
“To be honest, I think ‘Tank’ is operating on another level right now. It seems he’s more interested in pursuing the Jake Paul fight than facing off against top fighters like us,” Davis stated.
Davis acknowledged that Tank’s interests appear to lie in establishing his legacy while seeking substantial financial opportunities outside traditional boxing involving names like Paul and even potential WWE crossover bouts.
Controversial Draw and Upcoming Rematch
For several months, discussions around a possible exhibition match between “Tank” and Paul have circulated, especially after Tank’s controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach, which ended in a chaotic ninth round where he controversially knelt to wipe his eyes. This has sparked debate about how the scoring might have influenced the fight’s result.
Davis remarked on the draw, highlighting that as long as Tank remains the dominant draw in the lightweight division, he holds significant influence: “Tank is clearly the one calling the shots and it will take someone who can decisively beat him to change that narrative in boxing.”
Looking forward, Gervonta is scheduled for a rematch with Lamont Roach on August 16 in Las Vegas, which follows their first encounter.
Feud with Teofimo Lopez
Keyshawn also turned his attention to another competitor, Teofimo Lopez – the reigning WBO super lightweight champion. After Lopez’s underwhelming title defense against Jamaine Ortiz earlier this year, Davis attempted to engage Lopez in discussions about a possible fight, but Lopez seemed less than enthusiastic, dismissing the prospect based on Davis’ fight record.
The feud intensified when Davis claimed Lopez sent him racially charged gifts, imitating messaging that was suggested by social media interactions before purporting Lopez to be ducking a confrontation.
Davis remarked, “Lopez needs to stop with his racist behavior; it’s unacceptable, and he’s avoiding me. I’ve shown interest in fighting him, but he insists on going with other opponents. It’s baffling.”
Upcoming Title Defense
Before chasing major fights, however, Davis must concentrate on his upcoming defense of the WBO lightweight title against Edwin De Los Santos. De Los Santos has not fought since a competitive loss to Shakur Stevenson several months ago and is known for his knockout power.
Davis elaborated on his motivation: “Honestly, this fight is about me proving myself and showing that I’m not just here to box. I aim to demonstrate my capabilities and excite the fans.”
He also added that each bout brings him closer to his ambitions of headline pay-per-view events, as many in the boxing community suggest a victory over De Los Santos will elevate his status further.
He believes in his path to greatness and remains dedicated to his goal, saying, “I don’t get carried away with hype; I just keep fighting and focusing on winning.”
As the boxing landscape evolves, Davis is poised to make his mark, keen to solidify his reputation within one of the sport’s most competitive divisions.
