Keylor Navas joins Pumas UNAM after advice from Sergio Ramos and Miguel Herrera

Keylor Navas Signs with Pumas UNAM

In a strategic move aimed at revitalizing his career, Keylor Navas, the Costa Rican goalkeeper previously with Real Madrid, has signed a one-year deal with Pumas UNAM in Mexico’s Liga MX. Navas, 38, who recently completed a short spell at Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina, sought guidance before making the transition.

Seeking Guidance

He reached out to former teammate Sergio Ramos, who currently plays for Monterrey, along with Costa Rican national team coach Miguel Herrera, whose extensive experience in Mexican football provided valuable insights.

Navas’s Commitment

During his introduction to the media on Thursday, Navas expressed enthusiasm about joining Pumas, emphasizing his commitment to success: “I’m here eager to give my all, to push myself, and to be on the pitch playing at my best. I have the mentality to make history, to be able to win a title. I believe we can achieve those goals by working with humility.”

The club is in urgent need of a title after a lengthy 14-year drought.

Financial Aspects and Influences

While financial specifics weren’t disclosed, reports indicated that Newell’s will receive approximately $2 million as part of the transaction. Navas’s decision was influenced not only by his talks with Ramos—who praised the competitive nature and solid infrastructure of Liga MX—but also by James Rodriguez, another Madrid alumnus currently excelling at Leon.

Navas noted during the press conference, “Liga MX is growing and is very competitive,” underscoring the league’s attractiveness.

Encouragement from Herrera

Navas also acknowledged Herrera’s role in his decision-making process. The Costa Rican coach, who has experience managing various top-tier teams in Mexico, encouraged Navas to make the move without hesitation. He remarked, “I spoke with Miguel because he knows the league and the club well, and he told me I should sign without a doubt.”

Looking Ahead

Additionally, the timing is apt for Navas as his national team prepares for World Cup qualifying matches beginning in September, placing him in proximity to Central America. Costa Rica will compete against Honduras, Haiti, and Nicaragua in Group C. This transfer indicates Navas’s ambition to remain competitive at a high level while also ensuring he is well-prepared for the international stage.
