Villanova’s Defeat Against St. John’s
In an unfortunate outing for the Villanova men’s basketball team, they suffered a significant defeat at the hands of No. 15 St. John’s, ending the game with a score of 89-57 on February 28. The defeat not only impacted team morale but also evoked a poignant recollection for head coach Kevin Willard, who has a past connection to St. John’s coach, Rick Pitino.
Reflections on Coaching Under Pitino
Willard served as Pitino’s assistant in the past, and memories of those days resurfaced, particularly concerning the intensity that Pitino is known for following an unfavorable game result. When pressed about the atmosphere at practice after such losses during his tenure with Pitino, the candid Willard didn’t shy away from expressing his thoughts.
“I’m not exaggerating — I was not bald when I started working for him,” Willard remarked, alluding to the stress of coaching under Pitino. He continued, “It’s an incredibly stressful experience. You really fear that your job is on the line every single day. It feels miserable.”
Willard’s Coaching Journey
Willard’s coaching journey began alongside Pitino in the late 1990s when he was an assistant with the Boston Celtics before transitioning to the collegiate level at Louisville. His father, Ralph Willard, also shared a similar coaching lineage under Pitino across various teams over the years. The younger Willard humorously speculated that Pitino has likely become even more intense as time has gone by:
“As he’s gotten older, he’s probably become more of a cranky old character than he was back then, but the fear remains.”
Looking Ahead
Despite Willard’s past challenges, he’s forging a new path as the head coach at Villanova, where he has guided the Wildcats to a promising 22-7 record. This season marks Willard’s first at Villanova, and he is hopeful about their prospects of reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022. With a career coaching record of 357-256 and a history of leading teams to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the last nine eligible seasons, it is clear that the experiences gained under Pitino, however intense, have contributed to Willard’s coaching acumen.
