Kenneth Walker III: Rising to the Challenge Ahead of Possible Departure from Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks Prepare for Super Bowl with Lineup Changes

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks are gearing up for an important matchup as they approach the Super Bowl, but they are doing so with notable changes in their lineup due to injuries. Zach Charbonnet, who has made a significant impact this season, suffered a season-ending knee injury during the NFC playoff divisional round against the San Francisco 49ers. Following the injury, Kenneth Walker III immediately rushed to support his teammate. Despite initial reassurances that Charbonnet would recover, Walker’s role on the team has expanded as they vie for a second Super Bowl title.

“It’s unfortunate what happened to him,” Walker expressed in a statement to The Associated Press, adding that he has been mentally prepared for increased responsibilities throughout the season.

In the wake of Charbonnet’s injury, Walker has not only stepped up but has thrived, showcasing his skills by accumulating over 1,000 rushing yards for the season (1,027) for the first time since his rookie campaign. He has averaged an impressive 4.7 yards per carry during the playoffs and has not dropped a pass, totaling 78 yards receiving with four rushing touchdowns.

Offensive Coordinator’s Confidence in Walker

In anticipation of their NFC Championship game against the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle’s offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak noted Walker’s capability in handling a heavier workload.

“He has shown us some excellent performances lately,” Kubiak indicated, emphasizing that while they trust Walker with additional touches, he won’t be shouldering the burden alone as the team offers support.

Walker has proven himself during the regular season, attaining at least 100 total yards in two of the last three games. He attributes his achievements to the collective effort of the team, where every player, including linemen and tight ends, has been pivotal in executing their roles effectively.

Future Uncertainties for Walker

As he prepares for what may be his last game with the Seahawks, Walker is also navigating the uncertainties of his future in the NFL. The 25-year-old running back is finishing up his rookie contract and looks ahead to free agency in 2026. His outstanding performance hints at a likely salary increase. General manager John Schneider, who selected Walker in the second round of the 2022 draft, expressed that losing him would be disheartening.

“Ken has been remarkable — explosive and more decisive in the last month and a half. We would absolutely love to retain him,” Schneider remarked.

Walker’s season has had its highs and lows, but he takes pride in rising to the occasion following Charbonnet’s injury, whom he considers a brother. As the Super Bowl approaches, rather than worry about his future, Walker is focused singularly on securing a win.

“I just really want to win the Super Bowl,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to the game and the team over personal concerns.
