NHL Regular Season Updates
In the midst of the NHL regular season’s latter half, Ken Holland, General Manager of the Los Angeles Kings, has been actively managing a range of challenges, including significant player injuries and recent roster adjustments. Notably, he secured the acquisition of Artemi Panarin while also navigating injuries to vital players such as Joel Armia, Kevin Fiala, and Andrei Kuzmenko.
Coaching Changes
However, his most recent strategic move was parting ways with head coach Jim Hiller, a change that was formally announced on Sunday morning. D.J. Smith, previously the associate coach, will helm the team on an interim basis.
During a press conference at Sunday’s practice, Holland elaborated on his reasoning for the coaching change and discussed the upcoming NHL trade deadline scheduled for Friday. Despite the anticipation surrounding the deadline, Holland indicated that he isn’t planning to be overly aggressive in making new trades, considering he secured a significant transaction by acquiring Panarin weeks prior.
“If we added Panarin on Thursday, that would constitute a major deal at the deadline,” he remarked to the press. “But we wanted him earlier, and we acted accordingly.”
Team Performance and Future Outlook
Holland believes the Kings are already prepared following Panarin’s addition and views the return of injured players as equally transformative as a trade deadline deal. He noted that while Fiala is sidelined for the season, Armia is anticipated to return sooner than Kuzmenko, which should bolster the team’s performance significantly.
Discussing the franchise’s future, Holland shared insights about the team’s draft assets. The Kings currently hold their first-round picks for the next three drafts along with two second-round selections in 2026. However, regarding this year’s first-round pick, he expressed a cautious approach.
“Considering our position in the standings, I don’t foresee our first-round pick being in play,” Holland stated firmly.
The comments come in light of the Kings’ current performance, which finds them seven places above the bottom of the league standings. Should the regular season conclude today, they would risk missing the playoffs for the first time in four years, while also holding the seventh-best odds in the upcoming draft lottery. Historical context shows that the seventh spot is precarious; last year, the Buffalo Sabres fell from seventh to ninth during the lottery.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead to Friday’s trade deadline, Holland mentioned that he would remain active in exploring potential trades but doesn’t intend to compromise the future with his first-round pick from the 2026 draft. Fans and players alike have shown mixed emotions regarding the coaching change, with forwards Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe weighing in on Hiller’s firing, acknowledging it as a significant moment for the franchise.
