Katie Boulter’s Victory at the Nottingham Open
Katie Boulter faced a tough challenge against fellow Brit Sonay Kartal but ultimately triumphed in their match at the Nottingham Open, continuing her quest for a third consecutive title in the tournament. After initially falling behind in the decisive set and almost facing a double break, Boulter demonstrated resilience to secure the victory with scores of 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, advancing her to the quarter-finals.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite feeling unwell due to the heat, the eighth-seeded Boulter managed to call for a doctor during the match.
“I am definitely proper British because I can’t handle the heat at all,”
the 28-year-old commented after the match, relieved to have overcome the hurdles. This victory marks Boulter’s 12th consecutive win in Nottingham, where she claimed her first WTA Tour title two years ago.
Upcoming Matches
Next, she is slated to face American player McCartney Kessler for a chance to move into the semi-finals. Boulter spoke of her fondness for the Nottingham courts, stating,
“I feel like I step into my house when I come on to this court. I have such great vibes here.”
She remains the sole British contender in the women’s singles competition, following the earlier elimination of Welsh teenager Mimi Xu by Poland’s Magda Linette.
Match Overview
Prior to her match, Boulter noted that she anticipated Kartal, who ranks just 11 spots below her, might eventually surpass her in the standings. The match saw Boulter start strong with a break that put her ahead at 5-4, eventually taking the first set. However, Kartal quickly took control in the second set, winning five games in a row.
As the third set progressed, Boulter found herself trailing again and faced a break point that could have given Kartal a 5-2 advantage. Nonetheless, Boulter rallied back, converting a break of her own to regain momentum and seal her win.
“I have so much respect for Sonay; she is such a tough competitor,”
she reflected, underscoring the competitive nature of their encounter.
