Karolina Pliskova’s Planned Comeback Sparks Doubts Over Fitness and Health

Karolina Pliskova’s Anticipated Return

Karolina Pliskova, the former world No. 1 and 2021 Wimbledon finalist, has expressed intentions to make her long-awaited return to the WTA Tour after more than a year away due to injury. Her last competitive match took place during the 2024 US Open, where she faced Mayar Sherif and won in a hard-fought three sets before being forced to retire in the subsequent round against Jasmine Paolini because of a persistent left ankle issue.

Injury and Recovery

Having undergone a second surgery related to the ankle injury this past May, the 33-year-old Czech player remains hopeful about rejoining the professional circuit. Competing next week at the WTA 125K tournament in Caldas de Rainha, Portugal, Pliskova is included on the entry list, marking a potential return to action for the first time in over a year.

Concerns About Fitness

However, doubts have emerged regarding her participation as she recently disclosed on the Rakety Podcast that she is also grappling with back pain, raising further concerns about her fitness.

“I’m going to Portugal at the end of the week. I hope nothing happens to me by then. I’m a little paranoid, but maybe not. I was supposed to play this week, but I have some back problems,”

Pliskova stated.

Challenges Ahead

Adding to the uncertainty surrounding her recovery, a report from Sport.cz described a troubling incident where Pliskova appeared to be limping while leaving the TK Sparta Praha training complex, with her ankle iced and equipment being carried by her husband and manager, Michal Hrdlicka. As her anticipated comeback draws near, the urgency to heal from her ankle and back issues becomes critical, especially since returning to competitive form after such a lengthy absence is no easy feat.

Impact on Women’s Tennis

Her presence would surely enhance the profile of the Caldas de Rainha event, which often lacks the star power seen in higher-tier tournaments. Although the WTA Tour has continued to showcase thrilling competition during Pliskova’s hiatus, highlighted by a fresh wave of champions, her return would be a welcome boost.

2024 Highlights in Women’s Tennis

2024 has been a notable year for women’s tennis, with four distinct players claiming Grand Slam titles. Madison Keys clinched her maiden major with a dramatic final win over Aryna Sabalenka, while Coco Gauff defeated Sabalenka in the French Open final amidst challenging conditions. Additionally, Iga Swiatek surprised observers by taking the Wimbledon title, overcoming her previous struggles on grass. After experiencing tough defeats, Sabalenka made a triumphant comeback by securing her second consecutive US Open title against Amanda Anisimova, who also fell to Swiatek in London.
