Kansas Coach Bill Self Remains Hospitalized; Will Not Travel for Game Against Colorado

Kansas Basketball Coach Bill Self Hospitalized

Kansas basketball coach Bill Self is not joining the Jayhawks for their game against Colorado on Tuesday night, as he was admitted to a hospital in Lawrence on Monday. According to an official statement from the University of Kansas’ athletic department, Self was feeling unwell and opted to seek medical attention simply as a precaution.

After receiving intravenous fluids, he reported that he was feeling better; however, it remains uncertain whether he will be able to travel to Boulder or if an assistant coach will take over during the game.

Health Challenges and Coaching Legacy

At 63 years old, Self has previously faced health challenges, having missed both the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments in 2023 due to a heart condition, which required a routine catheterization and resulted in the placement of two stents for blocked arteries. He underwent an additional procedure for two more stents in July.

Currently in his 23rd year of coaching the Jayhawks, Self boasts a remarkable 609-156 record, making him the all-time winningest coach in the program’s history. He led Kansas to national championships in 2008 and 2022 and was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017 after a successful career that also included tenures at Oral Roberts, Tulsa, and Illinois.

“Bill Self has been a pivotal figure in Kansas basketball, and his health is a top priority for us all.”
