Juventus Signs Jonathan David
In a significant move for the club, Juventus has secured the services of Canadian striker Jonathan David on a free transfer. The 25-year-old forward has signed a five-year contract with the Serie A giants. According to the club’s announcement, while the transfer itself is free, Juventus will incur additional expenses amounting to €12.5 million ($14.7 million) which cover agent and signing fees.
David’s Transition from Lille
This transaction marks David’s transition to Juventus after his contract with French club Lille came to an end. The striker had previously announced his departure from Lille in May, after a prolific season where he contributed 25 goals and 12 assists in 49 appearances during the 2024-25 campaign.
Jonathan David’s journey in European football began when he joined Lille from Belgian club Gent in 2020, in a deal that set a record for the French side. He made an impressive debut season, netting 19 goals and helping Lille secure the Ligue 1 title for the first time since 2011. Over his tenure with Lille, he amassed a total of 109 goals in 232 appearances, earning him a spot as the second-highest scorer in the club’s history.
Interest from Other Clubs
Despite interest from Chelsea, who approached David’s representatives in June 2024, no transfer was finalized. In various interviews, David has expressed his desire to play for a club with ambition, indicating his aspirations to win titles and engage in competitive football.
“Obviously, I would love to fight for titles,”
he stated, emphasizing the importance of joining a team that has a robust sporting project.
International Success
David is also notable on the international stage, having made 67 appearances for Canada since his debut in 2018, scoring 36 goals. Under the guidance of head coach Jesse Marsch, David has found even greater success, netting 10 goals in 21 matches since Marsch took over in May 2024. Marsch has praised David’s capabilities, calling him the
“most intelligent footballer I’ve ever coached”
and has high hopes for his potential to become one of the best in the sport.
Juventus’ Summer Transfer Window
With this acquisition, David becomes the first official signing for Juventus in the current summer transfer window, which also includes the permanent arrival of players such as Lloyd Kelly, Nico Gonzalez, and Michele Di Gregorio as well as the early signing of Pierre Kalulu.
