Justin Mayweather: A Journey in the Shadow of Greatness
Justin Mayweather, sibling to boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., has recently made headlines due to surprising revelations about his life and career. Known professionally as Justin Mayweather (Jones), he fought in the boxing ring between 2013 and 2022, although his journey has mostly remained in Floyd’s shadow.
Personal Revelations
During a 2020 interview with The Mayweather Channel at the iconic Mayweather Gym, the younger Mayweather opened up about deeply personal experiences, including not learning the identity of his father until the age of 19.
Despite this late discovery, Justin felt an intuitive connection to his famous half-brother Floyd, attributed to their strikingly similar appearances. He finally met their father in 2007, and this encounter marked the beginning of what would be a sporadic boxing career, guided by Floyd Sr. and his uncle Jeff Mayweather.
Untapped Potential
Jones expressed a feeling of untapped potential, arguing that if he had access to his father’s mentorship earlier in life, he might have matched or even surpassed Floyd’s achievements in the ring, noting that he considers himself the superior athlete.
“I believe I could have secured multiple world titles by now if I had the right guidance from the start,” Justin asserted, reflecting on their age difference—he is ten years younger than Floyd.
Although he respects Floyd’s unmatched legacy, he is confident in his own athletic abilities, claiming,
“I am a good fighter now.”
Reflections on His Career
In the conversation, he reminisced about his childhood sports experiences where he consistently ranked among the top competitors, expressing some regret over how his circumstances shaped his path in boxing. He started fighting at 19 after a lack of focus during college tryouts led him to enter the Golden Gloves, where he ultimately triumphed at the state level.
“Had I not started boxing, who knows what might have happened? Life is unpredictable, and I can’t dwell too much on the past,” he reflected.
Growing up without father figures was commonplace in his environment, and he has come to accept the emotional challenges that come with that reality.
Current Status and Future Aspirations
According to records from BoxRec, Justin fought primarily in Mexico, tallying five knockouts from his seven matches, but has been inactive since his last bout five years ago. Now at 37, the clock is ticking, and his hopes for a championship are rapidly diminishing.
World Boxing News reached out to inquire about his future plans in boxing, but Mayweather Jones has yet to respond to those inquiries.
