BOSTON (AP) — Jrue Holiday’s Triumphant Return
Jrue Holiday, now playing for the Trail Blazers, made a triumphant return to Boston, where he was met with an enthusiastic reception from Celtics fans. During warmups, cheers erupted when his image appeared on the jumbotron, a warm welcome that escalated to a standing ovation following a tribute video showcasing his pivotal role in the Celtics’ 2024 championship victory.
“It brought back good times,” Holiday reflected after Portland’s defeat to Boston, emphasizing the support he felt from the city and team. “Playing hard for them, they definitely have your back.”
Holiday’s Impact and Trade
Acquired by the Celtics before the 2023-24 season, Holiday was a key contributor in clinching Boston’s 18th NBA title. Unfortunately, the Celtics made the tough decision to trade him and center Kristaps Porzingis last summer in their efforts to manage the salary cap under the league’s tough second apron luxury tax rules.
This current season was intended to be a transitional period as the Celtics await star player Jayson Tatum’s recovery from an Achilles tendon injury. Despite this, the team has excelled, currently sitting atop the Atlantic Division and holding the second seed in the Eastern Conference, with optimism surrounding Tatum’s potential return for the playoffs.
Challenges and Emotional Bonds
Holiday himself has faced challenges this season, missing two months due to a calf strain and currently on a minutes restriction since his return two weeks ago. He scored 14 points in 24 minutes during the game against his former team before sharing heartfelt moments with past teammates on the court.
“It’s just like family. There’s a normalcy to it,” he said, signifying the bonds formed during his time in Boston.
Having played with several teams throughout his career, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Milwaukee, Holiday has grown accustomed to team changes. However, Celtics center Rob Williams III expressed the emotional impact of his trade to the Blazers in exchange for Holiday.
“Everybody’s first trade is just kind of a rough one,” Williams noted, recalling the bittersweet emotions of watching his original team win the championship. “I was happy for my dogs, but I also had mixed emotions about it. But I’m glad they did it for sure.”
