Josh Hart Discusses Finger Injury Setback

In a recent press appearance at the New York Knicks’ media day, guard Josh Hart disclosed that he has suffered a setback regarding a previous finger injury. Initially operated on in June, Hart explained that he re-injured his right ring finger and has opted not to undergo another procedure during the season. He stated,

“I’m just trying to get used to it, and then get through the season with it,”

indicating his determination to continue playing despite the discomfort.

Background on Injury and Recovery

Hart’s decision comes after he underwent surgery for the finger injury sustained while contributing to the Knicks’ notable playoff run to the Eastern Conference finals last season. Although he was expected to resume normal basketball activities over the summer, he admitted to facing ongoing difficulties with his hand.

Future Considerations

When pressed about the possibility of another surgical intervention, Hart was noncommittal.

“It’s something that a lot of people have,”

he remarked.

“I don’t think about it too much. I just try to go out there and play how I play.”

He emphasized his desire to continue playing aggressively and maintain his competitive mindset. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the challenge of adapting to playing with a splint, saying,

“I hate playing with anything on my hand… It might take a little getting used to, but that’s the best scenario for me right now.”

Performance and Team Dynamics

Hart’s robust performance last season, where he averaged 13.6 points, alongside career-highs in rebounds (9.6), assists (5.9), and steals (1.5) over 77 games, has raised questions about his role heading into training camp. Coach Mike Brown has been tight-lipped about whether Hart will retain his starting position or if Mitchell Robinson will take his place, as was the case during the playoffs.

While Hart firmly believes he has earned a starting role based on his previous performance, he approached the situation with humor, joking that he might request a trade if not selected for the starting lineup. However, he ultimately stated he is prepared to support the team’s best interests, regardless of his personal aspirations for starting.

“I think it would be extremely selfish for me to go out there and demand to start… It’s about what’s best for the team,”

he concluded, highlighting his commitment to contribute to the Knicks’ success as they envision a promising season ahead.
